The redevelopment of Empire Mall in Mornington has commenced
Defining the pedestrian entrances, restoring the memorial fountain, improving the playground amenity to suit all ages and maintaining functionality of café spill-out spaces
The Federal Coalition Government invested $600,000 in the project
The redevelopment of Mornington’s Empire Mall has commenced following the $600,000 investment by the Federal Government.
Federal Member for Dunkley, Chris Crewther MP, said the upgrade will see improved pedestrian access, improved playground, improved pavement and the restoration and relocation of the historic Balcombe Water Fountain.
“The upgrade provides an aesthetically pleasing, family friendly outdoor area for locals and visitors alike” Mr Crewther said.
“It will create a fantastic area for the community to enjoy the excellent local shops and cafe’s with their families and attract a greater number of people to Mornington.”
The historic Balcombe Water Fountain which was gifted to the town of Mornington by Jane Balcombe Murphy in 1924, will be relocated to its original location in Mornington Park.
Mr Crewther was joined by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Bev Cololmb and Councillor Rosie Clark at Empire Mall to announce the commencement of works.
“The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is very appreciative of this Federal funding boost,” Councillor Colomb said.
“Council will be putting forward a contribution of approximately $50,000 to further the redevelopment and the addition of an updated toilet block with disability access.”
The works, which are expected to finish in October, are being completed in stages to minimise disruptions to the businesses in and around Empire Mall.
“The works being completed in stages will allow traders to operate as normal with minimal disruption to their business”, Mr Crewther said.
“The redevelopment is also being carried out by local Peninsula organisation ‘Maw Civil Group’.”
The upgrade of Empire Mall was one of Mr Crewther’s 2016 election commitments.
